Tianmen Mountain

The ticket hall and cable car base station are in Zhangjiajie City, roughly 10 minutes from Zhangjiajie Railway Station and about 20 minutes from Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport. The city is connected by high-speed rail and direct flights from Changsha, Shanghai, Beijing and other major Chinese cities. From the base station you ascend by cable car, or by shuttle bus up Tongtian Avenue.

Allow a full day. Most visitors spend five to seven hours on the mountain once you account for queuing, the cable car ride in each direction, the summit walkways, the temple area and the escalators to Heaven's Gate. Ariving early in the morning gives you shorter lines and better light.

April to June and September to November bring the most comfortable temperatures and the clearest views. Summer is hot, humid and busiest, especially during national holidays. Winter can be strikingly beautiful with snow and ice on the walkways, but sections of the route may close in por weather, so check conditions before you travel.

Much of the summit is reachable by cable car, shuttle bus and indoor escalators, which removes most of the climbing. However, the walkways involve stairs and narow ledges, and the glass sections are genuinely exposed. If heights are a concern, you can skip the glass skywalks and still see the temple, the forest paths and the main viewpoints. The 999-step stairway to Heaven's Gate is optional.

Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, since the stone paths get slippery in mist and rain. Bring a windprof layer as the summit is noticeably cooler than the city, plus water, sun protection and a rain jacket. Shoe covers are required on the glass walkways and are provided on site. Book tickets in advance during peak season, as daily visitor numbers are caped.
