All the details about your upcoming adventure in one place
Tianmen Mountain is not just a scenic spot; it is an engineering marvel and a natural wonder rolled into one. Your journey begins right from the heart of Zhangjiajie city, where you board the world's longest high-altitude passenger cableway. As you ascend over 7 kilometers, the urban landscape fades into lush farmland before rising sharply into jagged limestone peaks shrouded in mist. The summit offers a thrilling mix of serene forest paths and heart-pounding adventures, including the famous Glass Skywalk clinging to sheer vertical cliffs 1,400 meters above sea level. The experience culminates at the iconic Tianmen Cave (Heaven's Gate), a massive natural hole in the mountain ridge, reached by the legendary 999 'Stairway to Heaven' steps. Whether you are seeking spiritual awe or adrenaline, this mountain delivers an unforgettable adventure.
Tianmen Mountain tickets sell out days in advance; our partners hold reserved allotments for guaranteed entry.
We secure 'Line A' tickets whenever possible, allowing you to descend the 999 steps rather than climb them.

Real experiences from real travelers
The cable car ride alone is worth the price. It just keeps going up and up! We booked the Line A ticket which I highly recommend because walking DOWN the 999 steps is much easier than walking up. The glass skywalk was scary but fun. Our guide made the logistics so easy.
Booking online saved us so much hassle. The queue for tickets at the station was huge, but we just showed our QR code and passport. The view from Heaven's Gate is spiritual. Make sure you check the weather; we had a clear day and it was perfect.
The organization was perfect. Picked up from our hotel on time. Unfortunately, it was very foggy at the top so we didn't get the panoramic views, but the mood was very mystical. The '99 bends' bus ride is a wild experience!
I cannot believe they built this cable car and these paths. The Coiling Dragon Cliff walk is spectacular. Be prepared for a lot of walking even with the cable car. The escalator inside the mountain is a life saver.
We took the private tour option. Our guide navigated us through the crowds perfectly. The lunch provided was a nice local Hunan style meal. The winter scenery with light snow on the peaks was magical.
Everything you need to know for your journey
Line A takes the cable car UP and the bus DOWN (recommended for easier walking). Line B takes the bus UP and cable car DOWN (requires climbing UP the 999 steps). Line C uses the bus for both ways and misses the main cable car experience.
The main cable car ride takes approximately 28-30 minutes and covers over 7.4 kilometers (4.6 miles). Note that during maintenance periods, part of this journey may be substituted with a scenic shuttle bus.
Access to the Glass Skywalk is included, but you must pay a small fee (approx. 5 CNY) on-site for mandatory shoe covers to protect the glass.
Yes, absolutely. You must present your original passport (not a copy) to redeem your ticket and enter the park. The name on your booking must match your passport exactly.
The mountain is open in rain and fog, which can actually add a mystical atmosphere. However, in extreme winds or thunderstorms, the cable car may temporarily suspend operations for safety.
Yes, there is a series of escalators inside the mountain (the 'Trans-Mountain Escalator') that runs from the bottom of Tianmen Cave to the summit. The upper section is included in your ticket, but the lower section (avoiding the 999 steps) costs an extra ~32 CNY.
The Lower Cable Car Station is located within Zhangjiajie city itself, very close to the train and bus stations. It is often walkable from downtown hotels.
There is no strict dress code, but respectful attire is recommended. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for the mountain paths.
No, large luggage is not allowed on the cable car or mountain paths. You can store luggage at the Lower Cable Car Station storage facility for a small fee.
